Background

The researchers at the University of Cambridge and Cambridge University Hospitals are running a study called Virtual Reality-Based Visual Assessments in Inherited Optic Neuropathies (VisuALLeyes-ION).

This study is led by the research team of Professor Patrick Yu-Wai-Man, an eye specialist who carries out research into inherited optic neuropathies at the University of Cambridge and Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

Research Aims

The main aim of this study is to find out if using the Virtual Reality technology is a reliable and valid way to measure visual function in individuals with Inherited Optic Neuropathies (IONs).

Our focus is on measuring the visual acuity and visual field using the VisuALL Virtual Reality headset device alongside the traditional visual assessment methods.

Who can take part?

  • Individuals aged 16 years and older
  • Individuals with a confirmed diagnosis of an Inherited Optic Neuropathy (IONs)

What is involved?

Participants will be required to attend two study visits (6 months apart) at the Cambridge Clinical Vision Laboratory (CCVL) located within the NIHR Clinical Investigation Ward at Level 3 of Addenbrooke’s Centre for Clinical Investigation (ACCI).

The study visits will last for approximately 2 hours.
