Raoul Kanav Khanna

Raoul Kanav Khanna is Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the University Hospital of Tours (France) and a Visiting Researcher in the Department of Clinical Neurosciences at the University of Cambridge, with a specialist research interest in neuro-ophthalmological diseases.

A qualified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained neuro-ophthalmologist, Kanav completed his PhD in 2023 in Dr. Laumonnier’s team at the INSERM iBraiN research unit, focusing on eye-based biomarkers in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. During his doctoral work, he developed a standardized workflow for human tear metabolomics, which is now being applied to Alzheimer’s disease research.

As a Visiting Researcher and GMC-registered physician, he is actively involved in neuro-ophthalmology research within the mitoCAMB group, contributing to clinical trials and observational studies for inherited optic neuropathies such as dominant optic atrophy and Leber hereditary optic neuropathy. He will lead the METABO-EYE trial, exploring tear metabolomics as a surrogate biomarker in these conditions.

Kanav is also committed to clinical, surgical, and academic activities. He serves as Associate Editor for the Journal Français d’Ophtalmologie, Deputy Scientific Director of the French Association of Strabismus and Paediatric Ophthalmology, and oversees surgical training wet labs for the French Society of Ophthalmology. He has authored several peer-reviewed publications and book chapters and remains active in national and international educational initiatives.
